How I Lost 20 Pounds by Learning to Hate
From January to July, the number on my scale dropped from 225 to 205. The secret wasn’t a punishing gym routine or a keto calculator. It was a targeted strike against a single enemy: my daily ritual of cracking open a morning Dr. Pepper and an afternoon Coca-Cola.
That habit was the soundtrack to my day. The hiss-crack of the can, the sugary rush, the inevitable crash. Breaking a ritual woven so deeply into your life feels impossible. But I found a blueprint that works, a one-two punch of architecture and disgust.
§1. Architect Your Fortress.
You cannot win a war fighting on enemy territory. Your first move is to make your home, your car, and your office a sanctuary.
My fridge used to be a colored armory of temptation. I purged it. Now, it holds a single Brita filter, always full. I leave the house with a full bottle of water. There is a Hydro Flask on my desk right now. Make the good choice the path of least resistance. When thirst hits, the easiest option must be the one you want. Get the bad out of sight; keep the good within arm's reach.
§2. Weaponize Disgust to Dismantle the Desire.
Architecture is the defense that gives you room to breathe. Disgust is the offense that wins the war for good.
I trained myself to see soda for what it truly is: liquid candy in a can. I would force myself to visualize the ten teaspoons of sugar mainlining into my bloodstream. I’d focus on the cloying, syrupy film it left on my teeth, a sticky residue that no amount of water could fully wash away. I'd sit with the fact that this liquid was engineered in a lab, optimized by chemists to be irresistibly, addictively sweet.
When you sear this reality into your mind, you don’t need willpower, because the desire itself withers and dies.
This isn’t about judging the person next to you ordering a Coke. This is a tool for your own liberation. The war is won in your home and in your head, not in a single skirmish at a restaurant. Disgust, when aimed at the things that hold you back, is a profound act of self-respect. Choose to hate wisely.
Post Script: Within hours of writing this, I had a medium Dutch Bros "Rebel", which was 100g+ of sugar.
